The Secret only dentist’s know
A young lady recently came to fix some old fillings on her front teeth. She’d already seen two dentists who had both insisted veneers were the only way to fix her teeth. After I understood what this patient wanted, I took a series of diagnostic photos and x-rays and compared them with what I found in her mouth. Guess what? She has an unhealthy, imbalanced bite. Any veneers put on those teeth with her bite the way it is are going to chip or fall off in a matter of weeks. Her bite would put unnatural stress on them and cause them to fail. That’s why her old fillings are failing too. The Smile Design Process a dentist uses is what makes the difference between beautiful, long-lasting dentistry and failed dentistry.
Just FYI, don’t ever accept expensive treatment plans from someone who didn’t take sufficient photos and x-rays to really see what you have going on in your mouth. And don’t trust someone who doesn’t take the time to study those records and study your mouth. Short cuts in getting to know you, your mouth and your needs lead to disappointment. Short cuts in planning lead to failed treatment and wasted money. The smile design process matters.
Our 5-Step Smile Design Process
Step 1: Getting to Know You
You are so much more than your dental problems. To best help you, we need to know you: Who are you? What are you looking for?
Think about it – How can I design your idea smile if I don’t know what your ideal smile looks like to you? How can I fix something you don’t like if I don’t understand what you don’t like about it? What matters to you and what can you afford? Recommending an ideal treatment that you can’t afford is worthless to you. Maybe you need a short term temporary solution. Maybe you need phased treatment. Are you in a hurry?
There are many ways to create a new smile and we want to pick the method that matches your vision, your timeline and your budget. This happens at the consultation and exam. If your case is complex, it may take more than one visit. The success of your treatment depends on understanding you and your mouth.
Step 2: The 2-Dimensional Planning Phase
We take photos of your current smile from different angles and distances. We analyze the teeth color, shape and sizes, current wear patterns, chips, etc and complete a facial analysis, including facial proportions and lip thickness positions. Once we know what we’re dealing with, we can make a plan.
Step 3: The 3-Dimensional Planning Phase
We make stone models fabricated from preliminary teeth impressions taken during your initial visit. Digitally or by hand, we will then create models of the desired teeth. These models show us how the teeth will look and also tell us exactly how to prepare the teeth for restorations.
Step 4: The Trial Phase
Depending on the number of teeth involved, we sometimes use the models to create Prototype Teeth Restorations. Teeth are prepared accordingly and these prototype restorations are cemented or bonded. During the next several days, weeks or even months, we will evaluate the success of our planning: specifically the form (dental esthetics) and function (chewing and speech) of the new teeth.
In the case you see here, prototypes were needed to finish the case design. You can see this patient’s gorgeous final teeth below in the Restoration Phase picture!
Finally, Step 5: The Restoration Phase
Once you and our Cosmetic Dentist team are satisfied with the design. Porcelain Teeth Restorations are fabricated according to the specific shapes and sizes of the models or Trial Teeth. These restorations then can be bonded or cemented with a very high degree of confidence they will meet the your expectations.
Each step in this process is critical to producing the results patients are expecting. Skipping steps leads to compromised outcomes and patient dissatisfaction. So many people complain about sub-par dentistry they had done by speed-foused dentists. This planning process takes extra time and yield superior results.

Cosmetic Dentistry & Teeth Whitening
We use the advanced KOR Whitening system to whiten and brighten stained teeth. KOR is considered the most effective whitening system because it can treat both regular staining as well as brown tetracycline stains that doctors used to think were untreatable.
KOR is also the only whitening system that includes a sensitivity reducing step in the daily whitening process. Whitening with KOR is fast and long lasting thanks to the combination of at-home and in-office whitening treatments. Read more about the Science of Whitening and Sensitivity induced by Whitening Gels.

Cosmetic Bonding: Instant New Teeth
Tooth-Colored fillings do more than fix cavities!
They create a whole new smile when teeth are severely discolored, misshapen, or broken. In a process called bonding, tooth-colored composite is “bonded” to the fronts of teeth to make beautiful new teeth.
Tooth-colored composite bonding does absorb stain over several years and needs to be re-polished or replaced more frequently than porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns. Despite the required maintenance, bonding is the fastest and least expensive way to get a new smile! Experience the difference: the best cosmetic dentistry in San Antonio and best Austin cosmetic dentist! Schedule a consultation today to find out how we can help you get the smile you want.

Veneers: Minimally Invasive, Maximally Beautiful
What do you do if your teeth are healthy but don’t look good? Porcelain veneers give you a new smile with sacrificing the least amount of healthy tooth structure. Getting veneers only requires shaving off a tiny amount (on average 0.5 mm) from the front of each tooth. Veneers are like a face lift for your teeth.
Before Veneers
After Veneers by Dr. Bec
Buyer Beware: If veneers are not made to fit properly, they can crack, break or fall off. When they do properly fit your teeth, they provide a gorgeous smile that can last for years. The key? Be sure your dentist includes a thorough bite analysis in the treatment planning phase! Don’t visit an Austin cosmetic dentist or a cosmetic dentistry office in San Antonio that doesn’t talk about bite analyses. Otherwise, you may find your beautiful new smile cracking up. Cosmetic Ortho: Balance Then Beauty
Have you ever seen anyone whose front smile teeth look like chicklets or horse teeth?
This typically happens when a dentist tries to “do you a favor” and fix large gaps with huge crowns or veneers instead of orthodontic treatment and then veneers. Orthodontic problems always need to be corrected with orthodontic solutions. Smile, teeth and face Proportions must be kept balanced for Cosmetic Dentistry to be successful. Ignoring proportions causes ugly results and unsatisfied patients! Learn more about Invisalign
Ready to Transform Your Smile with cosmetic Dentistry?
Real Life Example:
In the pictures below you see our patient who wanted to correct the gap between his front teeth. In order to keep everything proportional, we had to use Invisalign to spread the space out between the teeth before doing a try-in and final veneers.
What kind of dentist thinks giving you horse teeth is a favor?
These types of favors happen frequently when people simply go to whatever dentist comes up in a google search of “cosmetic dentist near me.” Just because a dentist lists cosmetic dentistry as a service on their website doesn’t make them a qualified cosmetic dentist. Check their qualifications if you want the best results.
Cosmetic Dentistry & Crowns: Rebuild, Strengthen & Beautify
When teeth are severely broken, decayed or defective, fillings and veneers don’t work. The only restoration that looks natural, protects the tooth and can replace a large amount of tooth structure is a full tooth crown.
Creating beautiful, natural looking crowns is a team sport. The dentist has to design your new tooth and pick the material that will best match your other teeth, while a dental lab follows the dentist’s design.

Crowns & Veneers by Dr. Bec
Crowns by Dr. Bec
Goodbye Ugly Metal Margins!
Crown materials just keep getting better. The ugly metal margins of old crown technology are a thing of the past. Since today’s crowns are made from new materials, they are now 100% tooth colored, stronger and more life-like than ever.
Getting a beautiful, long lasting crown requires choosing a lab with the skill and equipment to create the dentist’s design. Here at Precision Cosmetic Dentistry & Digital Dentures, we only use dental labs located in the USA with certified technicians, verified materials and long-term success record. Even if a dentist does excellent work, a bad lab will still make a crown that fails. Check out our finished cases in our patient gallery and you’ll see why other dentists’ say we do the best cosmetic dentistry in San Antonio and Austin. Learn more about Full Crowns Restorations
A Word to the Wise about Dental Labs
When you get new crowns or veneers, who actually MAKES the new smile teeth? The dentist designs it, but most dentists don’t have in office labs like ours to actually make it. So who does? An independent dental lab does. Your dentist sends the tooth “prescription” with all the planning details and models to a dental lab where a lab technician crafts your new smile teeth. Some of our crowns are made by Dr. Bec personally, in house. Others go out to the best lab in the country.
Choosing a good lab is one of the most important decisions your dentist makes. The best dentist’s work is worthless if his lab makes mistakes or uses cheap materials. But that seems obvious so why mention it??
Here’s the key. Labs vary widely both in quality AND in price. Prices depend on materials, equipment and training. Excellent labs charge dentists hundreds of dollars per crown. Many choose cheaper labs to save money. Some dentists even send their designs to China to be created at the lowest prices with unknown materials.
Your health and satisfaction are our highest priority
We want our patients to have peace of mind. Therefore, we only use labs in the USA with a proven track record of the highest quality dental lab work. We know our labs’ technicians personally and work with them constantly to guarantee our patients get the best results possible. We also refuse to use any crowns or lab-created restorations that don’t match our original designs and will have them re-made even if it means we pay twice.
Sometimes lab mistakes mean that a patient has to wait another week or two to get the final tooth. We understand that it’s frustrating to make multiple trips to the dentist, but refusing to use a defective crown is one way we can protect our patients from dental emergencies down the road.
Protect your mouth and your investment by always asking your dentist where their labs are located and how they choose their labs. We practice cosmetic dentistry in San Antonio and use the best USA labs!
