Not really… 3 Bad Kinds of Partial Movement

Complete and Partial Dentures

When people ask if a partial denture should move, the quick answer is “No, they shouldn’t move.” But I usually still ask each person to tell me what they’re feeling. A partial denture isn’t anchored into bone like natural teeth so it will have a small amount of vibration and wiggle. It can be popped out if you bite wrong. Still, it shouldn’t be moving around in the mouth when you talk or chew. It should stay in on its own and shouldn’t come out unless you take it out. The following three partial denture issues tell you that your partial denture needs servicing.

#1 Should Partial Dentures Move: Loose Clasps

With use, the metal clasps on a partial denture often slowly loosen. Eventually the loosen enough that the partial starts to shift and move all the time. This is not good for the partial, for your gums or for your remaining natural teeth. A loose partial clasp contributes to denture sores, wearing down teeth and denture wear.

#2 Restricted Movement from Too Tight of Clasps

Sometimes clasps tighten over time. This isn’t good for your teeth either. A too-tight clasp puts you at risk of a broken partial or tooth. You should be able to comfortably insert and remove your partial denture with minimal force. Should partial dentures move? No, they shouldn’t be moving around in your mouth; however, they also shouldn’t be completely stuck.

#3 Should Partial Dentures Move: Wobbly Plate

As time passes, bone loss from missing teeth will affect your gum and palate shape. Gum disease around remaining teeth can speed bone loss. Over time, bone shrinks and the pink acrylic plate of your partial denture will stop matching your gums well. This results in more movement, rocking and sore spots. An unstable partial plate creates the worst denture sores and discomfort. No one can chew or talk well long term with a wobbly partial plate. If your partial is rocking, it’s time to get your partial dentures fit updated.
