We all see the commercials for denture cleaners. They claim to disinfect, whiten, freshen… I’m surprised they don’t claim to re-grow teeth! Most of my patients don’t believe me when first I tell them that figuring out “What can I soak my dentures in overnight?” is not as important as simple nightly brushing. Keep reading to get my top three tips for keeping your denture fresh and clean!
(Hint: Following my tips will also save you money on cleaners!)
Soaking Option 1: Don’t Soak Them in Anything
Like I already said, people find it hard to believe that soaking their teeth overnight in denture cleanser isn’t necessary. We see too many commercials. The denture cleanser companies are right about one thing though: cleaning your teeth is very important. What they don’t tell you is that brushing with a soft bristled toothbrush and soap and water will do the trick just fine. My advice is to brush them, rinse them and let them dry in their case every night. The drying actually helps stop yeast growth and that keeps your gums a lot more comfortable and healthy. When my patients want to know “what can I soak my dentures in overnight?” I always tell them “Nothing” first. However, that doesn’t mean that denture cleanser is bad. In the next section, I’ll tell you my tips for using denture cleaner.
Soaking Option 2: Leave Your Teeth Overnight in Denture Cleaner
Denture cleaner tabs like Efferdent do a good job at adding freshness. However, they only really work if you’ve already brushed your false teeth. In my experience, dentures that soak every night in denture cleaner lose their shine sooner than dentures that are mostly brushed with soap and water. When people want to know about using cleansers and ask “what can I soak my dentures in overnight,” I always say that if I had a denture, I would soak it overnight in denture cleanser a max of one to two times per week. Even once or twice a month is enough to give that extra freshening when you brush them regularly.
Brushing is the Denture Secret Weapon!
People always ask “what can I soak my denture in overnight?” Most of the time people seem to think about cleaners because they forget that dentures are teeth too and can be brushed with a simple toothbrush. Brushing is your secret weapon in the battle to keep your teeth clean, comfortable and beautiful.
